Eastern Nile Basin Countries ChallengeC limate Change and Emphasize the Importance of Cooperation

The Eastern Nile Basin Technical Bureau (INTR), within the Nile Basin Initiative, concluded the activities of the Third Regional Stakeholders Forum for the Eastern Nile Basin Countries, which was held from the 18th to the 20th of this month. Four countries participated with diverse delegations representing diplomatic, legal, and media representatives, along with water experts from within the forum hall and via video conference. The participants included the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of South Sudan, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Ethiopia, along with representatives of the INTR. The aim was to exchange experiences among the participating countries and reflect them in a meaningful way. The forum emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination among the concerned basin countries, as they seek to address the challenges and obstacles they face in utilizing the Nile waters and working to rationalize their use, as well as to utilize rainwater and groundwater by taking the necessary technical and engineering measures to benefit from them in the near future. Participants also emphasized the need to confront the challenges of climate change facing the Nile Basin in particular and the world in general, through full cooperation and coordination between Eastern Nile Basin Countries

Dr. Al-Harith Mustafa, head of the Sudanese delegation participating in the Third Regional Forum, emphasized the success achieved over the past three days of the Third Regional Forum of Stakeholders in the Eastern Nile Basin Countries. He described the contributions of the members as excellent, stating that they will achieve the purpose of the forum as an innovative idea. He pointed to the results achieved through the exchange of diplomatic, legal, and media expertise, which highlighted the importance of cooperation between the basin countries to confront challenges, especially climate change. He addressed the most important issues raised, including an introduction to international law and water diplomacy, the necessity of resolving conflicts and working to achieve development, and the need for local communities in these countries to participate as a form of effective management to ensure regional stability and build a promising future for sustainable water use.
Engineer Thomas, head of the South Sudanese delegation, emphasized the importance of participating in the Third Regional Forum of Stakeholders in the Eastern Nile Basin Countries to discuss the most important challenges facing the region’s water resources and the importance of cooperation between the basin countries. He praised the various topics addressed by the forum, most notably the importance of confronting the challenge of climate change facing the countries, emphasizing the role played by water experts and the diplomatic, media, and legal aspects of confronting these challenges.
